What started the fire at the Big House in the Outlander books?
The obituary for Claire and Jamie brought Bree and Roger to the past. The fire is still to come in the series. What did start that fire in the Big House in the Outlander books? Will it be a storyline covered in Outlander Season 7?
During Outlander Season 4, Bree and Roger both find an obituary that tells them Claire and Jamie will die in a fire. In the series, the date is smudged, making the two travel through time sooner and partly ill-prepared. In the books, we have the exact date.
It turns out the date is wrong. This is all thanks to a printer who doesn’t really care about being factual. However, the fire does still happen. It takes place at the end of A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
The cause of the fire in the Outlander books
Of course, we are getting into spoilers in this post. If you haven’t read A Breath of Snow and Ashes and don’t want to know what that storyline is, I’d suggest clicking away.
The fire happens in December 1776 instead of January 1776. Yes, that’s a huge difference, and it’s no wonder the Frasers and MacKenzies thought they were safe. They’d spent time in the cabin in January to make sure they could avoid dying in the fire. When it didn’t happen, they thought they’d avoided it.
Well, it turned out that they hadn’t. The fire happens all thanks to Wendigo Donner showing up. I always get this storyline mixed up with Mrs. Bug searching for the gold, but that’s because a gold ingot does drop during the fight and brings out the Bugs’ involvement with the French gold.
Back to Donner. He comes to Fraser’s Ridge in search for gems. All he wants is to go back home, and he’s sure the Frasers will have gemstones to make it possible. A fight breaks out, and a bottle of Claire’s ether is knocked to the floor.
That wouldn’t have been too bad, except for the fact that Ian lights one of Brianna’s matches. Ether is highly flammable, and the entire house goes up in flames because of it. Fortunately, everyone important gets out alive. Donner and his men die in the fire. The obituary still goes out with Claire and Jamie’s deaths. Again, the printer doesn’t really care about facts.
