Graham McTavish is ditching the kilt for armor. He’ll be in House of the Dragon, and here’s what we know about his character so far.

We’ve known for some time that McTavish is going to be in House of the Dragon. It’s the Game of Thrones prequel series that is set 200 years before the events of the original series. McTavish will play a Goldcloak, and now we get to see his character and learn more about who he is.

For those who are new to the world of Westeros, a Goldcloak is a member of the Kingsguard. They swear an oath to have no children, take no wives, and to give up any ancesteral lands that may come their way. Their duty is to protect the king, and McTavish’s Ser Harrold Westerling takes his vow extremely seriously.

Who is Ser Harrold Westerling in House of the Dragon?

Ser Harrold is tasked with an important role: to protect Princess Rhaenyra, the chosen heir by King Viserys I. However, this is Westeros, and women can’t rule. At least, that’s the opinion of a lot of people. The idea of having a female ruler will scare many, and it starts a civil war in the Targaryen household.

Ser Harrold is going to be extremely important in the protection of his princess. He will need to do everything he can to prevent any threats on her life. That should mean we get to see a lot of McTavish on our screens.

You can get your first real look at the character thanks to Entertainment Weekly. The first teaser also had a brief look at him as he bowed to his king. Even if you haven’t watched Game of Thrones, you’ll be able to check out House of the Dragon to give you something during Droughtlander.

House of the Dragon premieres on Sunday, Aug. 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
