Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with the Frasers and MacKenzies discussing what to do about Phaedre. They can’t take her back to River Run, so they take her to Fraser’s Ridge instead. She has a place to recover. Everyone knows the truth about Jocasta and Ulysses now, and it’s clear that it’s not safe for her to be around Ulysses and Jocasta.

They’re interrupted by Jocasta, Duncan, and Ulysses. Duncan shares that there is no money. He’s sold River Run and as much as he can. He’s using the money from that to get Jocasta to Nova Scotia. It’s the best thing with the Revolutionary War starting up and them being Loyalists. Duncan hopes that Hamish MacKenzie (Colum’s son) and others from Leoch who escaped to Nova Scotia will be able to find a home for them.

Meanwhile, Jocasta talks to Claire about Ulysses. Duncan isn’t leaving her. He says he made a vow “for better or for worse,” and he’s keeping that vow. It’s clear to see why he follows Jamie. As for Jocasta, she shares that Ulysses’s name was Joseph and that they’ve been together for some time.

However, Ulysses can’t go with them to Nova Scotia. He goes to the stable that night, where Jamie is waiting with a pistol. Ulysses was going to take Gideon to get away from everyone. He will ride to Virginia where slaves have been promised freedom if they fight. Jamie agrees that Ulysses should die a free man and allows him to leave.

Ulysses does note that he could gain freedom. If he did that, he would need to leave North Carolina in 10 days or risk being recaptured again. He has always chosen Jocasta over his own freedom, but now he does need to leave. Jamie is angry that Jocasta committed adultery, but he does like that she got some sort of happiness when she has always married for duty.

One thing Ulysses does do is share that he didn’t take the gold. He even swears on Jocasta’s head that he didn’t take it. The question remains around the taking of the gold. Who did grab it?

As for Phaedre, Duncan is going to take her to be freed before they leave for Nova Scotia. It’s time for her to get her own taste of freedom.
