Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
It’s certainly clear that the gold storyline can come back up. The truth about Ulysses and Jocasta is about to come out to all now that Phaedre has been saved. However, I wouldn’t say this is foreshadowing, and it is more like plot development.
I think the foreshadowing is in Brianna’s decision. She decides to hand Bonnet over to the Committee of Safety to be hanged. At least, that’s the assumed way that he’ll be executed. Brianna doesn’t want Bonnet’s blood on Roger’s hands. She also doesn’t want to executed him herself. She wants them to hand Bonnet over to the Committee of Safety for the sake of their baby.
However, we know Bonnet is scheduled to drown instead. Brianna can’t let that happen. I don’t think it is a change of decision and her attempt to get revenge. I think she offers him a moment of mercy, proving her to be a woman of her word very much like Jamie.
Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter
The full chapter wasn’t used in the TV series. The only part we got was Jamie, Ian, Roger, and Claire getting to Brianna and Bonnet. The family manages to save Brianna, and she makes the decision to pass Bonnet over to the authorities.
There were some elements of this chapter that couldn’t be used. The show didn’t have Phaedre, so she wasn’t there for Ian to save. I think this was because the show couldn’t get Natalie Simpson back, but I also think that it’s because the gold storyline was pushed to later in the series.
We also didn’t get the big focus on the slaves. Bonnet didn’t have slaves to sell. That wasn’t part of his motivation in this chapter. He wanted Jemmy because he wanted to have power over the heir to River Run. I liked the way the TV show adapted this. I could fully believe that Bonnet would try to get his hands on Jemmy just to have River Run in his power.
All we needed was to see Bree saved and allow her to make a decision about Bonnet. Nothing else was all that important so I didn’t mind it being skipped over.
Okay, I did miss Ian using the mud on his face. That was made up for when it came to saving Claire.
