Which book is Outlander Season 7 going to be based on?
Outlander Season 7 is currently in production, and we’re hoping to see it sometime in 2023. Which book in the series is the season going to be based on?
For the most part, Outlander has followed the process of one book per season. There are certainly elements of each book that have to be skipped over, but we see the bulk of the content from each book make it into the season.
That is until around the fifth season. That’s the point where some storylines from other books were amalgamated into the season. We just have to look at how the end of Season 5 brought in storylines from the sixth book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. That’s despite plenty of storylines in The Fiery Cross that could have been used.
So, which book will Outlander Season 7 be based on? For those who want to get ahead before watching or those who want to stay behind to be show-first fans, you’ll want to know.
Outlander Season 7 is mostly based on An Echo in the Bone
The plan is to mostly stick to one book per season. There are no signs of the EPs changing that except under certain circumstances. That means for the most part, Outlander Season 7 is going to be based on the seventh book, An Echo in the Bone.
Pulling some of Book 6’s storyline into Season 5 was strategic from a TV series point of view. There was always the chance that Ed Speleers wouldn’t be available for Season 6 so the show decided to pull Stephen Bonnet’s storyline forward a season. After all, this was a storyline that couldn’t be skipped over.
It looks like the show is mostly getting back to doing one book per season. Season 6 was based on A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the sixth book. The season couldn’t be completed, though. Due to the pandemic and Caitriona Balfe’s pregnancy, the season was cut short by four episodes. Those four episodes will be tacked onto the beginning of Season 7. That means the first four episodes will be based on the sixth book before moving into Book 7’s storylines.
Maril Davis does want to see more seasons, up to the 10th. This would allow the series to cover each of Diana Gabaldon’s books—and she says Book 10 is going to be the last.
