How much older is Claire than Jamie in Outlander?
Claire is older than Jamie in Outlander, which would be considered odd for the time. We find that out early on, but just how much older is she?
Even now, people look at relationships where the woman is older than the man as strange. That would have certainly been the case in the past. Women would reach a point where they couldn’t have children, whereas men would seek younger women so they could have more.
That wasn’t something Jamie was bothered about. Age was just a number, and it wasn’t like Claire was at an age where she couldn’t have children. So, their age gap didn’t enter his mind.
It is a topic of conversation among fans, though. As fans try to figure out how old the characters are at each point of the story, they question how much older Claire is than her husband.
Claire is about four years older than Jamie in Outlander
The answer comes in the first book/season. Claire shares that she is 26. She was born on Oct. 20, 1918. It was 1945 when she fell through the stones, and she would have been turning 27 that year. In the show, she has already turned 27 by the time she falls through the stones as the series is set in October rather than May at first.
Jamie shares that he is 23. He was born on May 1, 1721, and yes, you may notice that there is a slight discrepancy in age. In the books, it was after May 1, 1743. Jamie should have just turned 22. (We also know that Diana Gabaldon has mixed up dates before, so this isn’t surprising.)
To make things even more complicated, there are two dates in the book depending on the version, that Claire travels back from. In the British version, she travels back from 1946, which would have made more sense due to when Claire would have made it back from Europe. This would have made her 27.
It does get really confusing, especially when you throw in discrepancies in the dates. Sometimes, it’s best just not to try to figure it all out!
