Why did the Outlander Season 6 finale end on a cliffhanger?
We’ve seen Outlander seasons end with some cliffhangers before, but nothing like the Outlander Season 6 finale. What was with that major cliffhanger?
The Outlander Season 6 finale did not disappoint. The only frustrating thing about it was the cliffhanger at the end.
We’re no stranger to cliffhangers at the end of Outlander seasons. The first season ended with Claire and Jamie sailing to France, and the third season ended with Claire and Jamie being shipwrecked in the colonies. There has always been something to push us into the next season.
However, the Outlander Season 6 finale cliffhanger was bigger than anything we’ve ever seen before on the series. Claire and Jamie were left separated, with Jamie riding with the Cherokee, Young Ian, and John Quincy Myers to get to Claire and save her from her upcoming fate.
What was with that major cliffhanger? Why would the show do that to us?
The Outlander Season 6 finale was four episodes too early
This cliffhanger is all due to the pandemic. We found out in June 2021 that the season was going to be cut from 12 episodes to eight.
This wasn’t the way the season was written. In fact, we know that Diana Gabaldon had originally written the ninth episode of the season. The plan was to film all 12 episodes, but then the summer brought too many challenges. The pandemic delays had already caused problems, and then the series had to work around Caitriona Balfe’s pregnancy.
Instead of constantly trying to hid Balfe’s baby bump and then around her maternity leave, the series decided to cut things short for the season. That meant reworking a few things to make sure the season could end with enough story points tied up while leaving us something to push us into the next season.
This cliffhanger certainly did that. We’re certainly ready to see Jamie and his entourage save Claire. Think of this wait as the six months Jamie had to hang on a window ledge during the first season. Jamie has a long ride to get to Claire.
