Confessions of self-medication in Outlander
Throughout Outlander Season 6, Claire used ether to cope with the trauma from the attack in the Season 5 finale. It all came to a head in Episode 7, when Claire worried that the ether led to her killing Malva and forgetting about it. When she realized that didn’t happen, she was relieved, but it didn’t stop the visions of Lionel Brown.
Jamie finally saw her as she tried to fight against using the ether. That led to Claire having no choice but to open up about her struggles, and it brought us a moment that pulled Claire and Jamie closer.
Jamie wasn’t angry about Claire using the ether. He listened to her, and understood the feelings she held. Didn’t he once feel this way? After Wentworth, he thought he should die because Claire shouldn’t want him, but we know how Claire actually reacted.
Then we found out the trauma went deeper. Claire wasn’t just dealing with memories of THAT night. She was dealing with the guilt of being the reason for Bree’s rape, Roger being sold into slavery, and much more. Had it not been for her coming to the past, none of it would have happened.
Of course, Jamie had a response to that. He also made it clear that he would be here for Claire to talk to. Leaning on him for support does not make her weak.
