Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with a brief mention of where the gems are going. I’ll admit that I always thought selling off all the gems was shortsighted. Yes, Roger had made the decision to stay in the past, but there was always the chance that could change. Nobody could tell if they’d need to get back to the 20th century. Even without knowing what would happen in A Breath of Snow and Ashes and onward, I did question this decision.

What I did love was the mention of Ned Gowan. Jamie wants him to find out more about the man that Laoghaire is with. He doesn’t need to know who the man is, just that that relationship is like that of a married couple. If it is like marriage, it will mean that Jamie’s duty to Laoghaire for the bigamy is over.

That doesn’t mean the sale of the gem will mean the proceeds come back to Jamie, though. Nor will they go to Lallybroch. Jamie is not going to overlook Joan, and this is something that I adore. Joan and Marsali became like daughters to him. He has treated Marsali that way, and he will continue to treat Joan that way. The money for the gem will go into a bank to save for Joan’s dowry.

The thoughts move onto Roger and whether he has made the right choice. He has made a brave one. After all, he could have chosen to go back to his own time; a time of safety. He’s chosen to stay in a time when he knows a war is coming. Jamie doesn’t have a choice to fight in this war, but Roger would have done.

Finally, we get an ending line that is one of my favorites. “if my last words are not ‘I love you’—ye’ll ken it was because I didna have time.”
