Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There are a couple of elements of foreshadowing linked to Laoghaire’s story in this chapter. The first is that this is a sign Jamie’s financial duties to her can start to come to an end. If Laoghaire remarries, Jamie will no longer need to keep sending money. It takes time for that to happen, though. It’s something that comes up in An Echo to the Bone.

It’s something that didn’t come up in the chapter, though. I’m surprised that Claire didn’t consider it or even Jamie. He would know that Laoghaire remarrying would be good for him financially.

The other element is the thought of hoping to never see Laoghaire again. This woman will never get out of their lives forever. After all, Marsali is Fergus’s wife. However, they will all come face to face eventually when Claire and Jamie sail to Scotland during An Echo to the Bone. We actually see Laoghaire ask something of Claire, making the way for Jamie’s alimony to stop.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

The chapter hasn’t been used in the series. We don’t get to hear much about what’s going on in Scotland. We didn’t really hear all that much about Jenny’s anger toward Jamie after Young Ian heads off with the Mohawk.

I’m not sure we’ll see any of this play out. Jamie’s alimony to Laoghaire hasn’t been a huge topic within the series. We know it’s there in the background, but we don’t hear all that much about how Jamie and Claire have to find the money to send to Laoghaire.

It could still come up. I think this will depend on how many seasons the series will have. There are a lot of rumors about Outlander Season 7 being the end, and that’s certainly possible. Plus, there are issues with the Scotland scenes as Laura Donnelly has made it pretty clear that she won’t return as Jenny, and we need Jenny for a lot of the Scotland scenes to make sense.

There’s also the chance that Nell Hudson may not be available. She has popped up in a lot of shows recently, so there is a chance that filming schedules will clash when it comes to the storyline. That’s something the writers will need to consider before opting for a whole episode dedicated to this entire Laoghaire storyline, which it surely will. I can see the letter coming up and then jumping straight to the storyline in Echo for it to make sense for TV show storytelling.
