Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t all that much foreshadowing in the chapter. At first, I thought maybe there was foreshadowing of the Bugs being up to something—and maybe there sort of is. In this case, they were planning ahead and getting things for Claire. But does this just foreshadow that they’re always planning ahead? That they are very smart people?

Then there’s Brianna. I think this is most of the foreshadowing. We get to see her at work and at how her MIT background can still help in the 18th century. People need items that they wouldn’t have thought of in this time period. Brianna can help with that.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

Of course, the chapter was used in the series. There’s no way that it couldn’t be used. However, there were a few changes to it.

The biggest one was Jamie deciding to have his leg amputated. It wasn’t just in the middle of the night as he was close to death. Young Ian played a part, too. One thing the book didn’t do was go into Jamie’s full reasons for not wanting Claire to amputate. We can take guesses, but he didn’t share everything because the chapter wasn’t from his point of view.

In the show, we got to hear his thoughts. That led to Young Ian being angry. After all, his dad lost his leg and at no point did Jamie think anything less of Ian. Why would anyone think less of Jamie? Why should Jamie think less of himself? I love that we see this change to Young Ian. Back in Season 3 and Season 4, there’s no way that we would have seen Young Ian stand up to his uncle like this. The Mohawk certainly helped give him confidence to call people out.

Brianna came up with the syringe in a different way. She didn’t need to be told what was needed by Claire. While it came from the snake head that Roger had in his bag instead of the snake Kezzie brought, the adaptation was still pretty similar. Brianna realized that the fangs could be used as the needle. She just needed to put something together to create the bit to hold the penicillin.

I love that we got to see Bree think for herself in the show and not only realize something because Claire finally said what she needed. It helped that the show handled the syringe storyline a little bit differently. Claire had her syringes until Alamance and that’s when one was destroyed. Bree knew the problem from the beginning, but she didn’t need to be outrightly told by Claire what was needed.

There was also the added drama in this part of the episode. Brianna realized things just in the nick of time without Claire even realizing what Bree was doing. All three people still had important roles in saving Jamie’s life, and even Young Ian played a part, too.

We didn’t get the Bugs’ part in the story, but that wasn’t all that necessary. There wasn’t the time to adapt every little bit of these recent chapters, so the least important elements had to be cut out. I didn’t mind losing this part, mostly because the Bugs haven’t become that big in terms of characters for the story up to this point.
