Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 91 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
We start with Claire examining the snake bite. She’s never had to deal with one before, but she does get straight to work. She needs to focus on fixing the problem.
While she does that, she needs to keep Jamie’s mind off things. Marsali is a great distraction, especially when Jamie points out that he knows she’s expecting her fourth baby. Fergus didn’t say anything to Jamie, but he managed to work things out based on Fergus’s concerns and worries. It’s clear that he worries about providing for Marsali and his family considering he only has one hand.
There are a few things she’s concerned about. One of those is sepsis. She’s concerned that there’s a blood infection, and removing the infected area would mean removing most of Jamie’s calf muscle. That’s sure to cripple him.
Claire is also concerned about the leg getting infected. There’s a point where she looks at a saw. It’s one she hasn’t used since Alamance, which sends shivers up her spine. However, she needs to consider the unthinkable right now.
Jamie won’t let Claire amputate. He refuses to let that happen, despite knowing that it would mean death if the infection was allowed to spread. There’s a conversation to come about this.
Claire’s thoughts move onto another situation. One of the buffalo has turned up, and Jemmy’s life is at risk. The women all work together to take the buffalo down. Now they need to figure out how they’re going to butcher the animal, but at least they have meat for the winter.
