Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t too much in the way of foreshadowing, except in the thoughts about Roger. Bree and Roger are struggling to reconnect with everything that happened at Alamance.

There is still a long journey ahead for Roger. I would have loved more chapters from Roger’s perspective at this point. We get a sense of his mental state with the things Bree and Claire observe, but getting into his head would have been interesting. It would have been dark, too.

It is the thing that I appreciate the most about the TV series. The show got a chance to explore Roger’s trauma a lot more in an interesting way that connected to Roger’s interests and life in the 20th century. I remember a lot of people saying “but Roger was never suicidal/depressed in the books,” but quite honestly, we never really got to know, did we?

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

This chapter wasn’t used in the series, and there are a couple of reasons why I think that happened. The first was time.

The show can’t include everything from the books. These quieter chapters that don’t really connect to the overall story just aren’t needed. They’re designed to give us more about the life on the Ridge in the books, but there just isn’t time to offer a lot of that in the TV series. It’s hard enough to fit some of the bigger storylines into the series!

Another reason would have been casting. For such a small part of the series, it wouldn’t have made sense to cast the young girls (a problem with scheduling younger actors as well) and someone as Obadiah Henderson. The casting would have added more cost for a scene that wasn’t all that necessary.

Yes, it would be nice to see more Bree and Jamie moments on the screen. This would have offered that. However, it’s all about balancing up the budget, the time, and the moments on the screen. Sometimes, the moments have to lose out.
