Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

With the journal entries, we get the foreshadowing of the Battle of Alamance. It’s not really foreshadowing since it really leads to the bigger plot point for the next few chapters. The journal entries make one thing clear, though. This is going to all end in favor of the British, whether you knew the history or not.

Brianna’s journal entry has the foreshadowing in it. This isn’t just about the Battle of Alamance, but about fear. Brianna dreamed of something, but she can’t remember. All she knows is that there’s a feeling of fear. We know what’s to come with the Battle of Alamance. We know what it means for Roger, and this is something that foreshadows that and the fear Brianna has for Roger’s life and for his future afterward.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

The chapter wasn’t used in the series. We didn’t really get that sense of fear Brianna felt. Instead, she figured out that the Battle of Alamance was about to take place and rode out to warn everyone. This put Brianna on the field with everyone else, which was more of a TV thing to do. You want your main characters in one location for something like this in a TV series.

The journal entries weren’t used, but we did get the mention of a letter in Outlander Season 5. Tryon did try to prevent the battle from happening. He tried to get the Regulators to stand down, but they refused to do so.

However, this part of the story also tied into Roger’s part of the story. Roger was the one to ride across, and the main focus was on getting Murtagh not to fight. Jamie and Murtagh didn’t want to be on opposite sides of the war. That put Roger in the Regulator’s camp, allowing the rest of that storyline to fully play out.

I didn’t mind the changes. The journal entries wouldn’t work for a TV series. We need to be shown things rather than told about the events that happened, which meant the use of letters wouldn’t make sense.
