Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There is a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. It’s clear that this is not going to be the last time we hear about the Frenchman’s gold. After all, Bonnet and Wylie aren’t just going to stop looking for it.
However, there’s another element of foreshadowing with the gold. It’s all about the third man. Jocasta wouldn’t be able to tell who he was because she would only know him by seeing his eyes. Now she can’t see those eyes, and the man talked but that wouldn’t help. He was a Highlander, though.
It’s all going to connect to the fire at the Big House. Get ready to learn more about the Bugs, although not until the next book!
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
The chapter wasn’t used too much in the series but was a little. The focus was mostly on Jocasta’s loss rather than the gold after Culloden. It’s all linked to Murtagh’s cause with the Regulators and Jocasta’s inability to support him in that. She lost a daughter because of the Jacobites, and she refuses to lose anyone else.
It’s a heartbreaking moment in the show. We had this beautiful older love storyline, but in the end, Jocasta had to do what was right for her. It helped to offer her a little more development rather than just an aunt or a widow.
It’s why I really liked the use of the storyline. We saw this strong woman who simply couldn’t follow her heart. After years of pain and grief, we got to see her make a brave choice by turning down love. It was smart, especially for the time period.
It will be interesting to see if the gold storyline will come up in Outlander Season 6. The Bugs haven’t been developed as much as in the books, and the show hasn’t really focused all that much on the gold. It’s possible that it’ll be a storyline that’s skipped over for the sake of condensing storylines to fit in the season.
