Claire and Jamie wake up to a surprise in the woods in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 31

We return to the woods in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 31. Claire and Jamie wake up to sounds of crying, but it’s definitely not one of the goats. It is a “kid,” though.

This is the chapter that brings in a newborn baby. Both Claire and Jamie are surprised by this addition, especially since Fanny Beardsley has disappeared into the night. They initially want to figure out what happened, but focusing on looking after the newborn is the biggest issue at hand.

We get to see Claire and Jamie immediately jump into caregiver roles. They both know how to handle babies, and they’re not going to let this one starve or go wanting anything if they can help it. But they need to figure out what to do next and get to Brownsville as soon as possible. There’s no time to wait anymore.

This is a chapter that was used in the series but in a slightly different way. Claire and Jamie weren’t on the road by the time Fanny had her baby, but the overall storyline was used because it was important. After all, it opens up a discussion between Claire and Jamie later.

Let’s dive into The Fiery Cross Chapter 31.
