Outlander Season 6 filming has started. With the story set in North Carolina, it’s common to think that’s where filming is. Where does filming happen?
We know Outlander first filmed in Scotland. It made sense considering the show was set there. When the settings moved to other parts of the world so did filming, although not to the same parts of the globe as the story.
Now the story is set in North Carolina. That’s where the Frasers will remain, although there may be the odd trips to other parts of the world depending on how the show adapts the books. Does that mean Outlander Season 6 filming is on the movie?
Filming will take place where Seasons 4 and 5 happened. Everything has remained in Scotland.

Outlander Season 6 doesn’t film in the United States
Despite having an American production company, Outlander doesn’t film in the United States. It never has, and it never likely will. The benefit of Scotland is that a lot of the backdrop can work for North Carolina during the 18th century. There are some aspects that need to be green-screened in, but for the most part, the country works.
Keeping production in Scotland makes a lot of sense. This is where the main studio for the show is, which has its own COVID testing facility for Outlander Season 6 filming. There are also plenty of locations around Scotland to work for the buildings needed, and the sets for other buildings have already been created.
It would be far too expensive to move the show to the States now. And that’s ignoring some of the issues with visas and Guild situations.
Scotland is the home of the series, and we love it so much because of this.
