Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

This chapter doesn’t have all that much in the way of foreshadowing. It’s a lot of plot development instead.

The only real bit of foreshadowing is likely to do with taking the Native American man to Nacognaweto. Remember what Nayawenne said about sickness and that it wouldn’t be Claire’s fault? It’s all about to come up again.

There’s also a little bit in how Lord John Grey got measles. He got it coming through Cross Creek and other areas, and there is a certain German family who will pop back up again.

Adapting the Drums of Autumn chapter

There was no way to avoid using this chapter, although not all of it was included. We got none of the man Claire treated in the shed, which wasn’t really the most important part of the overall story. I did find it heartwarming that Claire tried to help this man in a way his people would. She was respectful and kind, but it didn’t have a big role in the rest of the story.

The most important part of Lord John Grey getting sick. After all, he gets sick riding through to the Frasers and not from the man Claire is treating. His sickness is linked to the Muellers’ sickness, so this part couldn’t be skipped over.

Plus, John getting sick meant that we got one of my favorite parts of Outlander Season 4: Claire and John coming to an understanding of each other. There’s a mutual respect that is seen from this point in the story on the series.

The chapter was used later in the series, though. We got the Mueller story in the series before John Grey’s story, and that would have also affected the Tuscarora man Claire was treating. Switching the storylines around didn’t affect too much. After all, it was Murtagh that affected the most since he’s not in the book story at this point!
