Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

At first, this chapter of Drums of Autumn doesn’t look all that important. However, it sets the tone for Joe’s relationship with Brianna. It foreshadows something important.

When Brianna returns to the present day for help with Amanda’s health problems, she immediately turns to Joe. He doesn’t question anything about where she’s been or anything about Amanda. He just gets to work, making it clear that Brianna (and Claire) was right to trust him.

Joe is also the one that she trusts when she initially goes through the stones. He’s the one that Claire has trusted with the truth. We get to see that bond they all have, even if it is through Roger’s eyes.

There’s also the foreshadowing of Roger and Brianna both ending up looking forward. They tend up stuck in the future and there’s nothing for either of them to look back to. Roger’s thoughts are right. As long as they’re looking at each other, they can make it work.

Adapting the Drums of Autumn chapter

This wasn’t a chapter used on the TV show. Outlander Season 4 didn’t have a lot of time at the start of the season for Brianna and Roger’s courtship. It is a downside of so few episodes. I do wish there was a way to have added a little more to Outlander Season 3 or even into the first two episodes of Season 4.

It’s not just that we didn’t get time to see Brianna and Roger’s relationship blossom in the way Drums of Autumn could offer. I miss the scene between Joe and Roger. Honestly, Joe is such a big part of the books that I wished he could have been a bigger part of the series.

However, I have no idea what’s in store for later in the series. I had no idea if all the storylines to come in the books will be told on the screen, which could be the reason for reducing Joe’s part in the series. If he is to come back, the show will need to do a bit of work to give us Joe and Bree’s relationship to see Joe as a fatherly figure to her.
