Outlander Book Club: Drums of Autumn Chapter 3 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
This chapter is really just about getting to know Brianna and Roger a little more. While we got sections of Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager from Roger’s point of view, this is the first time we get to hear from Brianna’s point of view.
One thing this chapter does tell us is that the two characters will become much more important in later stories. The Outlander books are not just about Claire and Jamie, but about the entire family. It’s a story that spans time and generations, so get ready for things to grow more.
However, there isn’t much in the way of traditional foreshadowing that I spot in this book. It’s just about planting the seeds for their character growths and their relationship to form.
There’s just one little bit from the mention of the stones. Roger says that he’s too scared to go up to them, and I think it foreshadows that he’ll only go up for something extremely important, such as following Bree through.
Adapting the Drums of Autumn chapter
This chapter was partly used for the TV series. The show completely skipped over Gayle’s inclusion at the airport, keeping it focused on Brianna and Roger. I also don’t remember Roger mentioning the conference in Boston but that he was there for the Highland Games only. This would have mostly been to keep things to a minimum to fit in the episode. After all, there was a lot to fit in Outlander Season 4, Episode 3.
One of the problems I had with Bree and Roger on the TV show is that we didn’t have enough time to really get to know them. We didn’t get to see them bond much before they were arguing. That’s something Drums of Autumn was able to offer because of the liberty of time.
It does mean that it’s hard to really warm to the idea of the relationship between Bree and Roger on the TV series at first. I felt like we got more in Outlander Season 5, but I do wish the show would have included a little in Season 3.
