Outlander Book Club: Voyager Chapter 63 breakdown

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

Voyager Chapter 63 was mostly for wrapping up a few storylines, especially that with the Porpoise. However, there was a tiny bit of foreshadowing in the chapter.

It comes when Jamie mentions that he’s lost the pictures and he’ll have to just remember his children. That’s not the case. Little does he know but he will see Brianna and Willie in the future. They will be part of his life.

The chapter itself ends with a promise of more to come. Claire and Jamie are now in the Colonies, somewhere they considered going to start their new life together. After all, Jamie can’t go back to Scotland with the warrant for his arrest.

With everything that happened, we end with a little bit of hope.

Adapting the Voyager chapter

The chapter was partly used for the TV show. There was no need for the Porpoise storyline. This would have likely been difficult to film and may not have looked realistic done in the sound stage. So, the writers opted to handle the ending to Thomas Leonard’s storyline slightly differently. It was actually with a little more hope and positivity for everyone.

Lord John Grey had that excellent scene as he stopped Leonard from arresting Jamie. Not only do we see that John will always be there to protect Jamie, but we got to see the strong commander that he can be. Nobody died, and it was just a quick wrap up and a chance to see Jamie say a goodbye to Lord John.

The part that was used was the storm. Fergus and Marsali were also there with everyone, while they’re left in Jamaica in the book. But overall, the storm was the only necessary bit.

Instead of waking on a bed in a house, the Frasers wake up on a beach and find out they’ve made it to the New World. There is that same hope of a new start in Outlander Season 4.
