Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

This chapter is focused heavily on the present. We get the connections back to previous foreshadowing, such as the bones that Claire held when she was with Joe. However, there is a bit toward the end that I feel is there.

Claire talks about Young Ian catching syphilis from Geillis. While he doesn’t end up with the disease (possibly thanks to Claire’s intervention), there are problems of a biological nature for Young Ian and his future wife. They can’t have children, and Claire theorizes that it’s to do with the Rhesus factor.

It’s not quite the same, of course. However, I do feel like there’s a connection to Young Ian’s future problems with pregnancies.

Adapting the Voyager chapter

Everything to do with Stern was skipped over on Outlander Season 3, Episode 13. That wasn’t surprising considering Stern isn’t a character on the series.

However, the rock circle did come up. Claire and Jamie see it from a distance. They don’t go close to it. Instead, they head straight for the caves, where Geillis is waiting with a bound Young Ian and Hercules.

The fight involves Hercules on the show, mimicking the fight at Wentworth Prison with BJR’s brute a little. I do wonder if that’s something the show was going for, or whether it was to add some intensity by having Jamie deal with the brute.

Claire still kills Geillis and the Frasers still save Young Ian. All of the important parts are still the same. We even get the funny line where Young Ian says that Jamie left the rescuing a bit late.

There was a part missing from the books that I’m sure many readers wanted. It was the talk between Jamie and Young Ian. This was saved for the Outlander Season 4 premiere, and I appreciated it being placed here. It gave the two a quiet and personal moment without Claire overhearing it all.

Overall, the adaptation worked for a TV setting. The chapter works for a book setting. It’s what I love about well-created adaptations. You get two great stories.
