Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There is a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. Part of that is that Lord John Grey will always be in Jamie’s life in some sort of way. We’ll also get to see Willie again. There’s no way he’d come up at the end of Voyager just for the sake of it.

The main foreshadowing is in Mr. Willoughby’s storyline. We now know that he’s not the murderer, but he did know who the murderer was. He also has his own secrets and is working against Jamie. All of this is about to come up when someone finally finds Mr. Willoughby.

Adapting the Voyager chapter

Everything involving the murder wasn’t included in the TV show, but there were moments from the chapter that did get an adaptation.

My favorite is Jamie telling Claire about Willie when they were discussing Brianna during Outlander Season 3, Episode 6. During this chapter, Claire wonders why Jamie didn’t trust her with this knowledge. By Jamie telling Claire about Willie in the show, he gave us and Claire this hint that nothing had changed for him.

However, I will defend Jamie’s actions in the book in a way. He has always said to Claire there can be secrets but no lies between them. Jamie omitting Willie wasn’t a lie. It was a secret that he wasn’t ready to tell. That doesn’t mean I have to like it, though!

Another part that was converted was John and Claire talking about Carryiack. Claire did remember him on the TV show. I’m not sure which version I like best. I guess I like both all the same. It’s not like much was changed. I do like on the TV show that Claire showed her respect for John back then—she knew she wasn’t in trouble but John didn’t, and he defended her honor.

The conversation between John and Claire about loving someone but not giving your whole self was used on the show, but it was held off a season. We didn’t get that conversation until Outlander Season 4, Episode 6. And I’ll admit that I did love the placement on the show. It worked for the lack of time available in the TV series by the end of Season 3.

Plus, the conversation wouldn’t have fit during the ball. It made a lot more sense when Claire was helping John fight against measles.
