Outlander received the new Audience Award from BAFTA Scotland 2020

There are lots of Outlander fans out there, and if they have a superpower, it’s voting for online awards for their favorite show and actors.  The Scottish branch of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) introduced a new Audience Award this year, their only award voted on by the public, and Outlander just won it!

BAFTA Scotland held a digital awards ceremony on Dec. 8, and that’s where the award was presented to Outlander.  The Audience Award was created in partnership with Screen Scotland.  People were able to vote for their favorite show on the BAFTA Scotland website between Oct. 21 and Nov. 18.  The other nominees were Black and ScottishGuiltMurder Trial: The Disappearance of Margaret FlemingThe Nest, and River City.

The BAFTA Scotland awards were hosted by Edith Bowman and live-streamed on BAFTA’s Facebook and YouTube channel.  They tweeted about Outlander’s win on the official BAFTA Scotland account.

Both Maril Davis and Richard Rankin accepted the award for Outlander at the Scottish BAFTAs

Executive Producer Maril Davis sent in a pre-recorded video to accept the award.  She thanked the fans, saying “we have the best fans in the world,” along with the cast, crew, writers, and producers.

Richard Rankin was there to present another award so they pulled him on stage to accept this one, too.  He seemed rather miffed that they wouldn’t let him even touch the award, but he passed on a “huge, big thank you” from himself, the team, Sam, and Caitriona and added: “We appreciate the support.”

When grilled about Season 6 by the host, Richard said he knows what’s going on but couldn’t tell her anything in front of the audience.  It’s up to viewers to choose whether they think he’s actually read the scripts or not from his joking around.

Congratulations to Outlander for winning the BAFTA Scotland Audience Award.  Even though it’s an award chosen by the fans, critical recognition from an association like BAFTA is always a good thing.
