Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

Let’s get into the foreshadowing in this chapter. There isn’t that much. I do think the biggest is the mention of Marsali, and how much she’s fought to be with Fergus. She wants him, for better or for worse. It didn’t matter what anybody else thought.

We know Fergus goes through a dark time in later books. He struggles a little with only one hand and things that happen with his children. However, Marsali continues to stand by him. She wants him, but she also wants him to be the man she knows.

I think there’s also an element of foreshadowing for Brianna and Roger’s relationship without necessarily realizing it. Roger has always wanted Bree, but Bree hasn’t necessarily always wanted Roger. When they’re love for each other is put to the test, though, they both want each other; they fight to be with each other.

Adapting the Voyager chapter

The first part of the chapter wasn’t used on Outlander Season 3. Jamie had never made his way to the Porpoise, so was never separated from the Artemis crew. Part of that would have been to cut down some of the time, but I also think it worked better to cut down some of the drama. With books as epic as the Outlander ones, drama doesn’t need to be there just for the sake of it.

With the TV show having just 13 episodes, this part of the story could only really take an episode. Even if the show cut down Claire’s walk through the jungle, there wouldn’t have been enough time to do this full chapter (and the one before it) justice. It was better to keep Jamie on the beach with the men, and it allowed us to have that epic reunion on the beach.

The wedding was used. There was no way of avoiding that. However, the way of getting to the wedding was different, with Claire being the one to suggest it and not Marsali. That made sense with Claire being the one to spend time with Father Fogden and nobody else knowing him.

For the most part, the wedding was the same. I do think there was more emotion to it, especially that moment Jamie gave Fergus his name. Looks say so much, and Claire’s thoughts aren’t always on other people but herself. I also loved Father Fogden blessing Claire and Jamie’s marriage again. It was just that romantic icing on the cake.
