Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t that much in the way of foreshadowing in this chapter. The events just set up events still to come. They catch Jamie up on some of what Claire has learned and get ready to reunite the Frasers once more.

The chapter also confirms that there is a chance Claire and Jamie can save Young Ian. They are still a week behind the Bruja though.

Adapting the Voyager chapter

This chapter wasn’t used at all on Outlander Season 3. Instead of having Jamie sneak on board the Porpoise, he remained on the Artemis and was jailed for a short time. Jamie wanted to commit mutiny to get to Claire.

To be honest, neither of the storylines really suit Jamie. He had no reason to believe that Claire was in any danger. However, the TV show one suited him more than the book one did. At least, the Jamie that I’ve come to know through reading. I just don’t see him sneaking on board the Porpoise.

The show storyline didn’t see as over the top when it came to Claire and Jamie reuniting. Jamie and the Artemis shipwrecked on the island that Claire happened to be on was far-fetched enough. The idea of him getting to the Porpoise and ending up on Hispaniola where Claire and the Artemis ended up was just, well, crazy! Even in fiction, it’s crazy!

Yes, there’s a need to suspend belief for time travel. That doesn’t mean other elements of a story can be unbelievable. There needs to be elements that ground us in the world, and I had to suspend a lot of belief to accept Jamie, Claire, and the Artemis all ending up on the same island at the same time. It was easier to believe with just two elements.

And I do wonder if that’s why the show changed the storyline. Not only was it easier to believe, but it also cost less and took up less time. There was no need to find actors for the children by keeping Jamie with everyone else. Plus, we got that epic reunion on the beach.
