Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

It’s not really foreshadowing in this chapter. Instead, we get moments that will lead to something bigger.

The first is the mention of the governor. Oh yes, this is a familiar face. Claire will get to meet him soon, but she won’t know who he is right away despite already meeting him once. Lord John Grey is about to return. Get ready for that to be much bigger than what it initially seems.

Then there’s the Mr. Tompkins storyline. It’s clear he knows Jamie. Everything before this has been sewing these seeds. The ship has sailed from Edinburgh, where Jamie’s business was. The smuggling, the sedition, a lot is about to come up!

Adapting the Voyager chapter

There is no doubt that this chapter had to be used in Outlander Season 3. After all, it sets up so much. However, there were some changes.

Lord John Grey wasn’t involved in the ship storyline. For the overall story, Lord John wasn’t necessarily needed. Everything with his part of the story to come could wait until everyone was in Jamaica. With so little time to focus on the ship storyline, it’s understandable why Lord John’s part was cut out.

Then we have the Mr. Tompkins storyline. Instead, we get the man with the scarred face in Outlander Season 3, Episode 10. This is important for the show. The end result is still the same. This man knows who Jamie is and can cause major problems. However, we don’t need another character and remember that the storyline had changed considerably since Mr. Willoughby isn’t involved.

Instead, we have someone who has already been a threat. In the world of TV, we know from a glance that this character is important and dangerous. We know exactly what it’s about.

The part with Marsali is pushed to a later point of the show, timing it with the wedding to Fergus. It makes more sense to hold off on this scene on the TV show. The scene is also cut short, taking out everything about Laoghaire and focusing on Marsali wanting to enjoy her time with Fergus before babies.

The changes were necessary in terms of time. They also made sense/still kept the overall story the same.
