Droughtlander suggestions: Now is the time to watch The Queen’s Gambit
The Queen’s Gambit is an excellent show to get through Droughtlander
It’s that time of the week again, where we look for something to watch while waiting for new Outlander. If you haven’t checked out The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix yet, now is the time to do so.
Fair warning, this is a limited series. Once you’ve finished this one season, that’s it. While it won’t get you through too much of Droughtlander, it’s certainly going to be more than worth your time for the story, acting, setting, and more.
It’s based on the novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, and there’s absolutely no need to know chess to enjoy the series. However, we’re sure Jamie Fraser would be interested because of the chess angle.
What is The Queen’s Gambit about?
The Netflix series follows Beth (Anya Taylor-Joy), an orphan who discovers her love for and ability to play chess at the age of eight. That starts her journey to become the world’s greatest chess player in the world.
Considering this is set in the 1950s and into the 1960s, it’s unheard of an accomplished female chess player. She’s about to prove everyone wrong.
However, she’s battling addiction. And not just the addiction of becoming the world’s greatest chess player. She struggles with drug and alcohol dependency, partly to deal with her traumatic past.
There are a lot of topics that come up in this series. There are moments that will leave you angry and disgusted. There are moments that have you in love with the characters. And there are certainly moments that have you on the edge of your seat. You go through all the emotions over the course of seven wonderfully created episodes.
Why this show is perfect for Outlander fans
So, why The Queen’s Gambit during Droughtlander? Why a show that only has and will only ever have one season? It’s not like it will get you through Droughtlander.
Well, this show will become one that you’ll need to rewatch. The story is just so magnificently told that it will become a binge-watch over and over again, similarly to Outlander. You’ll never get bored, even when you know the ending.
There are just so many emotions you’re taken through. There are some harrowing truths shared. It’s easy to dislike a character because of their addiction or attitude to life, but Beth becomes one of those who makes you feel empathy for her even if she’s not someone you can connect to on a social level.
The series doesn’t dumb things down for the viewer, but it’s also easy to follow, even for a non-chess player. You’re pulled into this sophisticated world with intelligent writing.
