Add American Shadows to your podcast list during Droughtlander

There’s no doubt that this is going to be the longest Droughtlander yet. You’ll want to get as many podcasts as possible to help through it, and American Shadows is one for Outlander fans.

American Shadows is part of the Grim and Mild collection of podcasts. Released every other Thursday, it takes listeners into some of the lesser-known stories in history. Unlike Lore, the show isn’t narrated by Aaron Mahnke. Instead, Lauren Vogelbaum takes us into the world of history.

What makes American Shadows so great for Outlander fans? Let’s take a look.

What is American Shadows about?

The podcast focuses on lesser-known stories throughout American history. There are some dark tales that are often overlooked for bigger historical references or stories. However, these lesser-known stories are still important.

One of the episodes is about Abraham Lincoln’s body after his assassination. He wasn’t just buried and left to rest in peace, but most people don’t learn about the real story in history.

There’s also an episode on America invading Canada in 1866. While students will learn a little in history class, not all of the truth is taught.

Episodes are released every two weeks on a Thursday. There aren’t many episodes to get through just yet, but Aaron Mahnke doesn’t take breaks with the podcasts he produces. Each fortnight, there will be a new episode to listen to, taking listeners into another dark area of the past. Episodes are 33 minutes, which I find is a good length for informative podcasts.

Why American Shadows is for Outlander fans

If I’d told you of a podcast about Scottish history, you’d likely jump right at it. American history isn’t the first thing many people think of when it comes to Outlander. After all, Jamie is a Scot and the first few books/seasons are set in Scotland or involves Scotland in some way.

From Drums of Autumn/Outlander Season 4, the story moves to the New World. We get more focus on American history, and Outlander isn’t afraid to touch on some of the dark sides of that.

There hasn’t been an episode of America’s beginnings just yet, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be. One thing that Mahnke does is stay true to the facts. He’s not afraid to highlight some elements of history that people want to forget.

If you want to learn more about America’s past, this is the right podcast for you.

American Shadows is available on all podcast platforms and directly at the Grim and Mild website.
