Just the Outlander chapter

Outlander Book 3, Chapter 10 starts with Jamie in the storeroom. He’s wet and cold, and he starts to think about what Lord John Grey will do to him. He’s sure he’s going to be flogged and put back in irons, and he doesn’t cherish the idea of either of them.

So, why did he escape knowing that he’d likely be caught? Well, it was all about the Frenchman’s gold…sort of. It was actually about the mention of the “white lady.” Jamie is sure the man, who turned out to be connected to Leoch so Jamie knew him, was talking about Claire. Who else could the white lady be?

When he got to where the Frenchman’s gold was supposed to be, Claire wasn’t there. His hopes were dashed.

Lord John Grey now gets the chance to talk to Jamie about his escape. Of course, Jamie refuses to say anything. So, John decides to start the weekly dinners with the prisoner as a chance to learn more and many see Jamie slip up. Of course, John doesn’t know Jamie well enough to know that wouldn’t happen. If Jamie was to tell him something, Jamie would want him to know that.

During the dinners, Jamie gets the chance to request blankets and medicine for the men. John can do blankets, but others are a little more difficult. Food is even harder, so Jamie offers all the healthy men’s meat rations to go to the sick. John isn’t happy about that since the healthy men won’t have the strength to work and they’ll get sick.

So, Jamie requests that they be allowed to hunt rabbits. They won’t do it with weapons but with snares.

As the weeks go on, John finds a way to get Jamie to speak. He writes to Hal to know more about Jamie’s home and family. He decides to threaten the family at Lallybroch to get Jamie to talk. Jamie points out that it would have been impossible to get word to his family that he’d escaped. Who could he trust and who would he meet in such a desolate part of Scotland?

Jamie does admit to why he escaped and shares that the gold, which wasn’t from Louis by the way, was gone. Jamie threw it into the sea but did save one gem in case he did get away. John takes the gem.

It’s time for things to go back to normal.
