Outlander Book Club: Voyager Chapter 4 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There is a little foreshadowing in the chapter. The main element is Ian’s arrest. The British know that Jenny and Ian would protect their own kin. They know there’s a chance Jamie could be close by, and there are certainly plenty of rumors about it. We get this element of foreshadowing that Jamie will need to do something drastic to protect his family.
However, something big will have to happen for him to finally accept his fate. We know that “something” involves Fergus, which was hinted at in the previous chapter. The chapter is just building up to that.
Adapting the Voyager chapter
Not all of this chapter was used on the show. The focus on Jamie shaving was completely skipped. Instead, Jamie didn’t shave until it was time for him to turn himself over. I think that was used more as a way to mark this big decision and allowed for a convenient way to bring us the moment between Jamie and Mrs. MacNab.
However, there were elements of this chapter used. We got a chance to see what life at Lallybroch was like. We saw Ian being arrested, and Jenny trying to argue for her husband to stay. In the end, Ian was taken away. Nobody seemed overly worried, but they were concerned by the state of the prison. The deed of sasine was never brought up on the show, but there is a quick reminder that Young Jamie owns the property and land now.
The TV show needed to condense all of the Lallybroch elements into just half an episode. It was always going to be difficult, which meant finding sections that needed to be cut. While it is sometimes disappointing to lose the humor from the chapters, it’s easy to see why this much happen for a TV series. I am glad that little things like Jamie bringing the deer were still included.
