Claire’s standout moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 8

Outlander Season 1, Episode 8 gave us a look at Frank’s time in the 1940s. It also left Jamie hanging in a windowsill for six months. It’s time to mark the anniversary of the episode airing for the first time.

We’re continuing with the look back at the lead characters’ best moments. Let’s start with Claire, who almost made it back to her own time during “Both Sides Now.”

Here are Claire’s five best moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 8.

Speaking with Hugh Munro

The start of the episode for Claire and Jamie sees them enjoying a picnic together. Hugh Munro comes upon them with news for Jamie. He also has a gift to offer Claire.

We get to see Claire’s compassionate side in this moment. At the same time, she’s also reminded that this is a barbaric time. However, I’m sure she saw some horrible things after World War II. She doesn’t offer Hugh sympathy, though. She acts very much like she did with Jamie, and I’m sure that was a comfort to Hugh as it was to Jamie.

Learning how to use a knife

After the raid, everyone realizes that Claire doesn’t know how to kill. While Murtagh may think that the only weapon women should have is poison, Dougal knows that Claire needs to know how to protect herself.

We get a chance to see Claire become accepted by the men fully. After all, there’s no way they would have trusted her with the lessons if they thought her a spy still. And I love how seriously she takes all this even if she thinks she’ll never need to us the skills.

Calming herself to take action

Claire does need to use the skills, though. While almost being raped is traumatic, I’m impressed with Claire’s ability to still herself. She waits just long enough to grab her dagger and stab the British Army deserter.

We see that she can handle herself in a fight. She is able to do what needs to be done to protect her own life and Jamie’s life. And she can remain calm when necessary.

Realizing she’s in shock

After stabbing the British Army deserter, she goes into shock. Claire looks at her hands as they shake, knowing that she’s going into shock.

Most people wouldn’t know this. Even those with medical training wouldn’t always admit that they’re going into shock. Claire is able to take herself out of her own situation and diagnose herself, although she can’t do much to stop it.

Trying to get to the stones

Finally, we get that moment as Claire realizes where she is. She rushes to the stones at Craigh na Dun, hoping to get back to her own time. She’s desperate, calling out Frank’s name.

I still wonder whether Claire and Frank were either side of the stones at the same time. Was the portal open as she ran towards it so she actually heard Frank? Did Frank hear her? It’s a great effect to make it look like they’re so close to each other and yet they can’t reach one another.
