Claire’s standout moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 6

Outlander Season 1, Episode 6 aired for the first time on this day in 2014. While it’s a Claire-heavy episode, it’s also an important one. This isn’t just about Claire, but about Black Jack Randall and Jamie.

It’s time to look back at the episode. As we’ve been doing for the whole season so far, this is all about Claire’s best moments from “The Garrison Commander.”

Let me tell you that it wasn’t easy picking the five best moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 6, but here are the ones that stood out the most for me.

Sharing her sympathies for the Scots

During the episode, she spent some time with the English officers. There was a chance for her to feel at home, in the company of her own people. However, she quickly showed her sympathies for the Scots.

While the Highlanders hadn’t been the greatest of hosts, Claire could understand their fight. It helps that she has future knowledge, knowing of the lives that will be lost. We got to see her show her sympathies for the people who are starting to become her family.

The amputation

When a soldier comes in with a major injury, Claire quickly jumps in to help. She can’t help herself. Her war training has set her up for this.

She is quickly giving orders and treating her patient. She’s there when the surgeon shows up to do the amputation. While she looks away, she isn’t squeamish and doesn’t faint. I love this side of our heroine.

Holding her own against Black Jack Randall

When she returns to the room, Black Jack Randall is the only one there. She knows that she needs to hold her own against him while she waits for someone to escort her to Inverness. After all, Black Jack Randall has so many questions for her.

Claire deflects some of the questions. She argues back, even though she probably shouldn’t. She manages to think quickly when she does slip up. We see this battle of wills between the two of them.

Showing Black Jack Randall some sympathy and compassion

I know Black Jack Randall doesn’t deserve sympathy or compassion. He’s not a nice man, but there is a moment on Outlander Season 1, Episode 6 where it looks like he regrets some of his actions; where it looks like he wants to be a better man.

Claire turns from hatred to compassion quickly. Of course, she turns back just as quickly when Black Jack Randall shows that it was all a rouse. But I am glad that we get to see that Claire is able to offer him compassion for a while.

Realizing she has no choice but to marry

At the very end, Claire just sits with the marriage contract. She knows that she has no choice but to marry Jamie. It’s either that or she ends up in a prison, and the latter will mean she definitely can’t get back to the stones.

Claire tries to look for a reason for Jamie not to marry her. She thinks he has someone else he wants to marry. Little does she realize but there’s a reason Dougal wants Jamie to marry Claire.
