Add Grantchester to your list of Droughtlander watches

If you’re still looking for something to watch to get through Droughtlander, PBS Masterpiece is often the place to turn. Grantchester is just one of the shows available, and it is certainly a must for Outlander fans.

Set in the 1950s, Grantchester is somewhat different to Outlander. There isn’t the love story between Claire and Jamie. Nor is there any time-travel, magic, or even Jacobite rebellions. This series is a TV crime drama, but brings a lot of humor and heart.

What is Grantchester all about?

James Norton starred as vicar Sidney Chambers in the first three seasons of the series. When he left, Outlander‘s Tom Brittney joined the show as vicar William Davenport. Both have played the roles of a sleuth within the town to help Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, played by Robson Green.

Set in the 1950s in a Cambridgeshire village, Sidney Chambers, and then Will Davenport, help an overworked detective to solve crimes. The vicars are able to offer a softer side to the police work, encouraging the victims and witnesses to share information. This can even help to find suspects.

Robson’s Geordie Keating is rough around the edges. However, he is dedicated to the work and he’s grateful for the help he gets, even if he doesn’t always show it.

There are five seasons to the series so far. A sixth has been confirmed.

Why watch Granchester as an Outlander fan

With no love story and no time travel, what is there to love about the series? A lot of it comes down to the bond between the lead men. We get to see how two vastly different personalities work together, offering a balance to be able to solve the case.

You may also want to check it out for Brittney. He joined the series in the fourth season as the lead and he’s remained with the show since, promoting the exciting news that it has been renewed for a sixth season.

The series is also based on a book series by James Runcie. This isn’t a show where it’s one book per season. The first season saw all six stories from the first book. From there, things are adapted slightly. This is especially the case with the Christmas special between the second and third seasons.

This is a relatively easy series to binge-watch. Each season only has six episodes, and the episodes are relatively light for a TV crime drama. The show is more like an Agatha Christie murder mystery. The gore is removed and the focus is on the clues and the story. For those who love the drama and the conversations between the characters on Outlander, this is a huge selling point.

Of course, there are the sets and the costumes. You’ll see a very different style with the 1950s instead of the 18th century.
