My 5 favorite Claire moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 5

Claire headed out on the rent party during Outlander Season 1, Episode 5. It wasn’t easy at first, but she soon warmed up to the men around her.

This was an eye-opening experience. At first, Claire was focused on leaving the men behind. Then she realized the cause the men supported. It left her feeling sad for the men, realizing that some of them would likely die within the next few years.

It’s time to break down Claire’s best moments throughout Outlander Season 1, Episode 5. Here are my favorite five moments.

Immediately helping Ned

We open the episode with Claire meeting Ned Gowan. This is our introduction to the lawyer, who will become important to Claire at a later stage. I love that she is instantly open to a friendship with him, even if he closes off from her when she realizes the truth about the Jacobite cause.

However, the moment that stands out is when Claire diagnoses Ned with asthma and immediately finds a treatment for him. He is surprised but also thankful for her actions.

Waulking the wool

While the men deal with the rent, Claire wanders around the village. That’s where she comes across the women who are waulking wool. It’s a chance to experience Highland life, and Claire jumps right in. While she doesn’t fit in with her odd speech and accent, she quickly shows she’s willing to join in, including offering her pee in the bucket.

Claire can fit in if she tries. We get to see that in this moment because she’s given a chance.

Trying to give the goat back

When Claire learns that the family’s only goat has been given for payment and the baby needs it, Claire is angry. She can’t accept that this is way of life in the Highlands. So, she decides while angry with Angus that she will take the goat and hand it back to the family.

All she wants to do is what she believes is right. Ironically, when Dougal learns that a village doesn’t have anything to share but will give what they can, he lets them off. Of course, later it’s about the Redcoats taking things whereas this moment is just normal life.

Giving Jamie the blanket

One night, Claire gets a room in an inn. Jamie decides to sleep on the floor outside. Claire wants him to sleep in the warmer room, but there’s no way he would dishonor her. So, she decides on the next best thing: the blanket.

There’s a moment between the two characters as she hands over the blanket. You can see the connection there, and it’s clear Claire is interested in this young man.

Feeling closer to the men

Finally, it’s all about the ending. Claire learns that Dougal and his men are Jacobites. They will all likely fight at Culloden, and that means the majority of them are likely to die. Suddenly, she starts to feel sorry for the men.

Then there’s the moment where the men defend Claire after the others called her a w***e. She starts to sense a friendship with them and even tries to fit in. It’s about time!
