Foreshadowing within the Outlander chapter

I’ll be honest and say that I don’t see all that much in the way of foreshadowing. Maybe the scene with Bouton is foreshadowing that a dog will certainly become a beloved member of the family. Or maybe it’s foreshadowing the relationship Jamie and Adso will have in the future. I think at the time of writing, it was just a little bit of fun.

The main bit of foreshadowing is in the “S.” Well, it’s not foreshadowing per se but it does connect to the rest of the Paris storyline. It’s clear this S isn’t just a letter leftover. It means something important.

We get to find out that the S stands for Sandringham. Oh yes, he is a Jacobite after all.

Connecting the Dragonfly in Amber chapter to the show

Finally, we look at how this chapter was developed for the Outlander series. It was used, but not in the same way.

At this point in the show, Jamie wasn’t happy that Claire was still working at the hospital. It was taking his wife from him and he couldn’t understand that Claire needed something to do. She needed to feel useful.

It was Claire who suggested they take the music to Mother Hildegarde, which is when Jamie puts up another fight. How do they know that they can trust Mother Hildegarde with something like this? In the end, they can and they take the music to her, where the three of them together work out the cipher and find that leftover S.

I actually prefer the way that the show did it in this instance. It fit well for the timing of the episode, but it also suited Jamie’s personality a little more. We’re reminded that he’s a man of his time expecting Claire to remain home, while also seeing that he doesn’t trust anyone outside of Claire and Murtagh at the moment.

One thing we do completely skip over is Jamie’s interaction with Bouton. It’s a shame because I enjoyed this little snippet, but I understand why it was skipped. It’s not all that important, so it had to be removed due to time in the episode. Also, it’s not easy working with animals so it was probably just better to avoid as much as possible, only using Bouton when necessary.
