Could Caitriona Balfe direct a future episode of Outlander?

The Outlander star recently talked about directing on the Outcasts podcast

Caitriona Balfe was the most recent guest on Tim Downie and David Berry’s new podcast, Outcasts, where the star talked about her interest in directing on Outlander.

Now before you all get too excited, this news is nowhere near confirmed. As Caitriona mentions in the podcast, it’s not something easy to get the chance to do but hopes one day they will let her direct.

Balfe specifically said:

"I’ve made no secret of the fact that I would love to direct. I think this would be the perfect opportunity for me since I know the show so well, I know the crew so well. I think I have absorbed a lot of information watching the countless directors that we’ve had on the show. And it’s just something I think I would love to do."

Isn’t directing the next step?

Caitriona and Sam Heughan also just received their producer credits during Season 5. She talked about this giving her the opportunity to continue to grow on a show she’s been a part of for so long. Directing could be that next step.

I’m not going to say that it’s not possible for her to direct an episode in Season 6, but since it took a while for her and Sam to even get their producer credits, it might be too soon. She’s still going to be learning all about being a producer now that she and Sam have more input, especially when filming and production can start back up. That’s why I don’t think we would see her behind the camera in the upcoming season.

While we still don’t have any new season orders for Outlander, I really don’t think STARZ is going to cancel the hit-show. Outlander has such a big following and is clearly one of the network’s most popular shows.

I hope for all of our sakes, but now also for Caitriona’s, that the show does get renewed so she has the opportunity to direct. It’s definitely something we’d all want to see and this lovely lady is so talented. She’s proven herself in this show and her roles outside of Outlander. We know she’s definitely up to the task!

Caitriona also talked about her time modeling and its connection to acting, Jaime and Claire’s relationship, and the challenges of filming intimate scenes on the show.
