Outlander Book Club: Book 2, Chapter 6 breakdown
Adapting the Dragonfly in Amber chapter for the Outlander TV series
This chapter was used for the show. It had to be. However, some of the circumstances were different.
In this Dragonfly in Amber chapter, Jared has already thought of a business proposition for Jamie. It’s clear that he wants to meet with Jamie to assess Claire, possibly to make sure she’ll be capable of hosting dinner parties for a Jacobite cause.
However, that’s not quite the case in the show. The TV series didn’t use the abbey in France. We didn’t see Jamie get a recommendation from his Uncle Alexander. Their plan was to head to France knowing that Bonnie Prince Charlie would be there, and they needed to hope that Jared would take them in.
They needed to prove they were loyal to the Jacobite cause. This added a little extra drama here for the TV series, which is needed for a show.
Most of the rest of it was the same, especially when it came to the Comte St. Germain. There was no need to change the way the Comte was introduced. At the same time, the Comte is needed throughout the French part of Outlander Season 2. He plays a pivotal role in many parts of the books, so we needed him in the show.
Claire and Jamie don’t quite need Jared’s help of getting out of the area at the burning of the ship. However, Claire knows that she’s made a dangerous enemy.
