Why Stateless during Droughtlander

Sure, on the surface, this isn’t a show for Outlander fans. There’s no love story, no time travel, and definitely no Jamie Fraser. That doesn’t mean it isn’t something worth watching. There is going to be a few things that stand out.

One of those is the ability to tell a true story with a fictional twist. After all, Outlander offers many true stories with some fictional twists. We’ve had the Jacobite rebellion, the War of the Regulators, and the Revolutionary War is coming up. We’ve seen fictionalized versions of some prominent people in history.

Stateless is based on the true story of Cornelia Rau, an Australian-German woman who was wrongly placed in a detention camp in Australia’s desert. After escaping a hospital and refusing to give her name to authorities, she spent 10 months in a detention camp for “unlawful non-citizens.”

There is more to Rau’s story that connects to the series.

The Handmaid’s Tale Yvonne Strahovski plays an Australian air hostess with a mental illness. This flight attending is running from a cult, something that Rau was doing back in 1998.

While telling this story, it’s also a series that’s focused on the horror of these detention camps. It shines a light on the things that go on in them, with the hope that it could bring change. It’s certainly worth the watch and support.

The downside is that it’s a limited series. There don’t seem to be any plans yet to bring a second season.
