How was Roger in the shower in his own time but also in the past on Outlander?

During Outlander Season 4, Roger found another set of standing stones. It looked like he had gone back to his own time, but we quickly saw him back in the past. There are some questions about this from fans, so it’s time to break down the events and explain.

At the end of Outlander Season 4, Episode 10, Roger found the stones. There was a chance for him to escape the troubles of the past, even possibly recovering and then going back to find Brianna. In fact, at the start of Episode 11, that’s what it looked like he did.

The start of the episode opened to Roger stepping in a shower in his own time. There was a look of relief and comfort, but then he was suddenly back in the past.

It was all in Roger’s head

Going to his own time was in his head. It was a daydream, as he thought about what he could have been doing. When he considered going through the stones, he decided that his love for Brianna was too strong.

If he went to his own time, there wouldn’t have been a chance for him to escape and get back to Brianna. So, he needed to stay and hope there was another way to escape. That didn’t stop him imagining a time.

In a way, daydreaming about his own time was a way for Roger to survive. It was a mild way to disassociate himself from what was really happening—the poor treatment as he bathed in the water by the lake.

He never really went back to the future. Roger always remained in the past and that’s where we picked things back up after he’d been pulled out of the daydream while at the lake.
