Where to pick up the story from the Outlander Season 5 finale

The best way to read Outlander is definitely from the beginning. There are many details that are missed in the show purely due to time or because the scenes can’t be filmed realistically enough. But what if you want to pick up the story from where the show has left off?

We’re now at a point where this is tricky. In simple terms, “A Breath of Snow and Ashes” is where you’ll want to pick up the story from off the back of the Outlander Season 5 finale. The sixth book in the series was used partially for some of the storylines in the fifth season, but there’s so much more drama to tell.

However, there are moments from earlier books used in Season 5. We could see that happen on Season 6. And then there’s the fact that the show could opt for some of the storylines in the seventh book for the future episodes.

It’s best to read from the beginning

I picked up the books after watching the show. I did start with the first book, but as I’d watched the first three seasons and had limited time, I decided to jump ahead to the fourth book, “Drums of Autumn.” I hadn’t even gotten close to a quarter of the way through by the time Season 4 aired but I did finish it.

Then I moved onto the fifth book and onward. I’ve since gone back to the earlier books, which was always going to be my plan.

I think going from the third season and moving onto the fourth book is the last place you can really do this from. After all, the fourth season cut off with a few chapters left to go with “Drums of Autumn.” And those chapters are extremely important for the next book storylines. However, it looks like some of the storylines are being skipped over or transformed at a different point within the show due to time available.

It is now best to start from the beginning. That’s why we’re starting the Outlander Book Club on June 1. We’ll start with the very first book. And considering how long this next Droughtlander is going to be, there’s a chance we’ll catch up before Season 6 airs.

But if you really do want to skip ahead, “A Breath of Snow and Ashes” is the point we’re at in the TV series. Sort of.
