Outlander Book 9 Daily Lines: Roger thinks of the past
Roger contemplates the past in the Outlander Daily Lines, spoilers for Bees
Diana Gabaldon certainly found a way to mark Memorial Day 2020. She brought us another Daily Lines post for Outlander Book 9. In this post, it was all about Roger thinking of the past in a timely way.
The novel, “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone,” will certainly involve moments of the 20th century, but it looks like it’s going to be through thoughts of the characters’ pasts. Roger contemplates a time when he was just a teenager in the post, getting the chance to talk to a military chaplain who had served during World War II.
It all starts with Roger asking whether the chaplain had killed anyone. This isn’t a question people should really ask soldiers, but Roger is an inquisitive 13-year-old. And considering the chaplain is, well, a chaplain, it might seem odd for a 13-year-old adopted son of a minister that a chaplain would kill. This chaplain doesn’t hesitate with his answer, making a point that he’d be useless dead.
The thoughts of the past connect to the events Roger is seeing at the time. For those who are all caught up in the books (and I think you all will be if you’re looking at Outlander Book 9 spoilers), you’ll know that Roger turns to being a minister—he heads on a spiritual journey during the sixth book which helps him become someone useful to the men in war. And we all know the Revolutionary War is coming.
Roger’s thoughts of the past connect to something that he has to do while in the middle of a battlefield. He is there for the men as some of them take their final breaths.
