Could Outlander Season 6 bring Ulysses back to Fraser’s Ridge?
We have no idea when Outlander Season 6 will be able to start filming, but that doesn’t stop us from speculating and wondering. There is a world of storylines in the books to pick, but the writers like to craft their own stories at the same time. Could Ulysses be a story they adapt further? Could we see him return?
I’ll admit now that it’s highly unlikely we’ll see Ulysses back. Something dreadful would have to happen in England leading to Ulysses making the trip back across the perilous seas. There are a lot of reasons not to take that journey—the main one being that this isn’t the type of cruise we’re used to now!
What happened to Ulysses on Outlander Season 5?
For those who need a quick reminder, Ulysses murdered Forbes. Sure, he did it to protect Jocasta, but as a black man, he was in far more danger than anyone else. He would be hanged for his crimes, so he needed to get away.
Fortunately, there were options with the Frasers. Being a free man anyway and knowing Lord John Grey was heading back to England, it made sense for Ulysses to join him. His manumission papers would have been accepted much better in England than anywhere in the Colonies. Once he stepped off the boat in England, he could be a free man.
I’d love to believe that Ulysses chose to remain a servant to Lord John Grey. This is a job he knows well and Lord John Grey is a fair and kind man. The two would get to know each other well on the ship across to England, allowing Ulysses to see a side to Lord John that he wouldn’t have done already. Although, I’m sure Lord John Grey would give Ulysses a good recommendation should he want a job elsewhere.
There’s no reason for Ulysses to return
In the novels, we don’t see Ulysses again. Granted, his exit in the books is different to the show. The invention in the show works for the setup in the story, though. I’m certainly not complaining—and I like that we have a potential spin-off with two characters we know.
Things would have to go terribly wrong for Ulysses in England to return to the Colonies. He knows he’d be arrested if he returned to North Carolina. Most other colonies wouldn’t take him—and probably wouldn’t view him as a free man despite his manumission papers. It’s just safer in England.
Plus, Ulysses wouldn’t want to impose on others. He certainly wouldn’t want to put Claire and Jamie in danger.
What about if Claire and Jamie headed to England to see Lord John Grey? It’s highly unlikely, but we do know the two should head to Scotland if the show sticks to the books. They could travel to England for a visit while on the same island. This could lead to Ulysses returning.
But these are all what ifs and possibilities just to keep a great character (and excellent actor) on the show. It’s highly unlikely we’ll see Ulysses return to Outlander Season 6 or beyond.
