Outlander Season 5, Episode 9 delivered the bison attack from “The Fiery Cross.” While there were certainly some changes to the scene, it was still a moment of the women working together. Yes, even Lizzie! The show has given us a look at the filming of the scene.
We’d already gotten to know a little about the filming from the Inside the World segment. However, now we get to see who played the buffalo/bison and why it was so important for the writers of the episode.
This was a moment of the women working together as a team. They all had a part in taking down the bison. Even Lizzie. While she screamed and didn’t go to grab Jemmy (part of the flight-fright-fight response kicking in), she wasn’t completely useless. She moved slowly to stand between the bison and Jemmy and she did scream to alert the others that there was a problem.
If Lizzie had moved quickly, the bison would have likely attacked. We saw what it did to Brianna when she managed to get its attention. So, I’m not against Lizzie at all in this scene.
However, looking at the filming is always interesting. What I find fun is that a crew member dressed up as the bison to attack Bree. Since the bison would be added with CGI, the cast needed someone/something to look at. So, one of the crew members had a red X to mark where Bree needed to look as she got the “bison’s” attention.
Plus, it was an important episode for the writers, especially the female writers. This is all about girl power.
Unfortunately, one thing we don’t get to know is how Bree got up without a limp. I guess that’s something we’re not going to find out.
Outlander Season 5 continues on Sundays on STARZ.
