Outlander Season 5, Episode 9 finally saw Engineer Brianna step up to save the day. It’s certainly good to see her, and with an excellent reason.
If you were disappointed that Engineer Brianna didn’t show up for the Biblical plague that hit the Ridge, Outlander Season 5, Episode 9 may have made up for it. The woman stepped up, and just in the nick of time!
When everyone feared all they could do was amputate Jamie’s leg, Brianna realized that she could actually make a syringe. Thanks to the natural way a snake’s fang and muscles work, Brianna was able to create a syringe for Claire. It was the perfect end to a scary episode.
But there’s a bigger reason that I appreciate Outlander Season 5, Episode 9 bringing us Engineer Brianna. It was the conversation she had with Claire while they dyed materials.
I’ve always said that I was trying to be patient when it came to Brianna. I feared the writers would just see her as a mother, but I wanted to see the whole season before making a judgment. Episode 9 didn’t just bring us Engineer Brianna finally, but also gave us a reason for her holding back at this point.
Like Roger, she’s a woman of the future. She doesn’t quite feel she fits into the past, trying to find a way to make her skills work. Unlike Claire, she can’t just throw herself into saving lives. She’s an engineer at heart, but there isn’t a place for that in the 18th century.
Or is there? Something that Claire points out is that it doesn’t matter what Brianna is called. After all, Claire is known as a surgeon, a healer, and even a witch. It doesn’t matter what others call her—although she definitely doesn’t like being called a witch—but what she does. Claire is focused on saving lives, and she wants Brianna to follow her own destiny.
That means finding a way to be an engineer in the 18th century. While it would be a man’s job, Brianna has a brilliant mind. It’s time to bring that out. And Bree does it in a life-saving way.
As Roger took the first step to save Jamie’s life by sucking out the venom and Claire took the second step by helping Jamie come back from the brink of death, Brianna took the final step to make the syringe to get the penicillin in to fight the infection. All three had important roles to save Jamie.
Thank you, Outlander, for bringing us Engineer Brianna finally. Now keep it up!
