Outlander Season 1, Episode 9 aired for the first time on this day in history. To continue the throwbacks for the season, it’s time to look back at the ratings for the midseason premiere.
Sadly, this was an episode that saw a drop in the ratings. Maybe this was something that STARZ expected. After all, things picked up a couple of weeks later. After long breaks, the drops in ratings are common. Fans can realize that the show isn’t back or they decide not to tune in live right away.
The exact ratings sat at 1.220 million people tuning in with a 0.27 demo rating. They were down 13% and 28% respectively from the midseason finale. However, those viewing figures are still much higher than the live ratings we see today.
There are a few reasons for the higher numbers when Outlander Season 1, Episode 9 aired. The first is that the STARZ App wasn’t what it is today. It wasn’t until around 2016 that the App became what we have now, with people having to tune in live on the STARZ channel to watch episodes. That naturally meant that the ratings were much higher.
Now, we get episodes released on the app at midnight on the day of release. The episode then airs at 8 p.m. on the channel. Fans have multiple ways of watching, so they get to choose when and where. STARZ focuses mostly on the subscription views, which are figures we don’t get to know.
Episode 9 was an exciting episode for many, but it also remains one that has fans divided. It’s the episode that saw Jamie save Claire from Black Jack Randall and the beating that came after it. While some of this was taken directly from the book (there were some small changes for the sake of production), fans remained divided over the beating—both looking at it from Jamie’s and Claire’s points of view.
