Can’t get enough of the information about Outlander Season 5, right now? I have some more, and it involves the use of flashbacks to tell the story.

While the majority of Outlander Season 5 is set in North Carolina and in the “present” time (ie. the 1770s), there will be some flashbacks used to tell the story. And those flashbacks are going to be set in Scotland.

This may or may not be all that surprising. Not only did we get a clip of a younger Murtagh with Jamie as a child, but we know that some of the filming took place at former locations used. We also know that the Gaelic expert, Àdhamh Ó Broin, was back on set during filming. It was only for a day, but it suggested that there was some sort of return to speaking in Gaelic.

According to Radio Times, showrunner Matt B. Roberts has confirmed that there will be flashbacks in Scotland. For the first three seasons, Scotland was a character in itself, and the production wanted to bring it back in some way since filming takes place in the country.

What I will say after screening the first four episodes is that one of the flashbacks is to the very first season and I think you’re going to adore it. However, that’s the only flashback I’ve come across in four episodes.

What’s not clear is how the flashbacks will be used. Are they mostly going to be clips of previous seasons integrated back into the story or will they be new scenes, a little like the opening clip of the premiere? I get the sense that we’ll see a mixture of the two, and I do feel like this helps to bring a sense of the very first season back to the story.

There are plenty of reasons to bring flashbacks. In fact, there’s a moment in “The Fiery Cross” where Jamie is praying for guidance and thinking on what Dougal would do. This would be the perfect time to bring in a flashback of sorts; a scene with a younger Jamie and Dougal MacKenzie.
