Why Sam Heughan wanted the uniform in Outlander Season 5
There are many people questioning the decision to put Jamie in the uniform of a Redcoat in Outlander Season 5. Here’s why Sam Heughan wanted it.
What were your thoughts when you saw Jamie as a Redcoat in the Outlander Season 5 trailer? Were you uncomfortable and shocked? I know there were a lot of complaints thrown at the show for the decision, and then Sam Heughan shared that he wanted this to happen. In fact, he was the one to pitch the idea.
And CinemaBlend says that he fought for it. This was something important to him, because of everything that it means.
There are many who say that this is a bad decision, something that Jamie would have never done. It doesn’t stick to the books and it goes against everything that Jamie believes. But really, the use of the uniform shows the compromises that Jamie will have to make in the fifth season. It shows the dilemma and the way he’s forced to follow the oath he’s made to Governor Tryon.
There’s no doubt that Jamie won’t want to wear the uniform. It goes against everything that he’s stood for in the past and will bring up some terrible memories. He (and we) constantly saw Black Jack Randall in the uniform, bringing up all those memories of his father’s death, the floggings, and everything that happened at Wentworth Prison.
Wearing the uniform is a way for Jamie to make another sacrifice. He’s doing this for the people he loves, the people he wants to protect. The only way to keep his lands right now is to do everything the British say; he needs to follow Governor Tryon’s orders. That may/will change in the future, but for now, he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place.
It’s not a moment in the book, but Sam Heughan has nothing but good to say about the storyline. We can trust him, right?
