5 New Year’s Resolutions Claire Fraser should make in 2020
It’s that time for New Year Resolutions. Up first we have Claire Fraser. Here are the five I think she should make in Outlander in 2020.
It’s a new year and a new decade. This is the perfect time for Outlander characters to think about making some New Year Resolutions. Claire Fraser is up first, and I have five that she should probably make.
Okay, so these are for 2020 but Outlander isn’t set in that time. We’re just having a bit of make-believe fun here!
5. Be a warm and nurturing grandmother
It’s clear that Claire was quite a strict and cold mother towards Brianna. That’s something that we get a sense of throughout the Season 2 finale and into Season 3. And it’s clear why. Claire was never really all there for Brianna with part of Claire’s life in the 18th century, always wondering about Jamie.
Now Claire has the chance to be the warm and nurturing grandmother. Not only is Jemmy around, but Fergus and Marsali are on the Ridge, so Germain is also around for Claire to nurture.
4. Build a stronger relationship with Brianna
There wasn’t as much of a chance to build a strong relationship with Brianna, although Outlander Season 4 certainly saw her try hard. She came to Brianna’s defense when necessary.
That needs to continue in Season 5. We need to see Claire as someone Brianna can openly turn to when there’s trouble.
3. Continue to support Jamie
Something that Season 3 and some of Season 4 lacked was the support the Claire offered Jamie. We got a glimpse of it again in the fourth season at the theater. When Jamie needed Claire’s help, she didn’t bat an eyelid. She didn’t question why and just offered the distraction.
We need to see more of this. Allow the two to work together as a team again. There are plenty of opportunities in “The Fiery Cross” and hopefully, they’ll be used in Season 5.
2. Think about how her actions will affect others
Before Claire does something radical, she needs to think about others. In Outlander Season 4, Episode 2, she was so focused on saving the slave that she didn’t even consider what it could mean to the other slaves on the plantation.
Claire has her views, but she needs to take a step back from the situation. Assess and consider everyone else first. This is even more so important now that she has her daughter and grandchildren around her.
1. Stop using 20th-century views in the 18th-century world
This was one of the resolutions for 2019 and it continues to be a resolution for 2020. One of my dislikes about the TV show version of Claire is that she forces her 20th-century views and knowledge onto the 18th-century world. No matter how much she tries, she can’t speed up the process of abolishing slavery.
While she can take steps to cause little harm, such as using slaves as little as possible when at River Run, she can’t just try to abolish slavery in a day. This is just one example. Another comes from Season 3 when she tried to convince the ship’s captain to stop letting his men have their superstitions. She just needs to take a step back and consider if there’s anything she can do with her 20th-century views.
