Outlander Season 5 needs to give us screentime between certain characters. Roger and Fergus are two of those characters that need to bond.
On Wednesday, I looked at the need to see the relationship between Marsali and Brianna develop during Outlander Season 5. The same can be said for the bond between Roger and Fergus. With that in mind, I’m using Day 20 of the 25 Days of MacBree-mas to touch on this need.
Roger and Fergus have already met, but they didn’t realize it. While looking for Brianna, Roger stopped Fergus in the street to show the picture. There was the hope that someone had seen her around. Sadly, Fergus didn’t recognize Brianna and he had no idea who Roger would become to him.
And now we should get a chance to see Roger and Fergus bond together as brothers-in-law. There may even be that chance of a vague memory of seeing each other, maybe that whole “haven’t I see you before?” thought we all get now and then.
The show should give us more time to see this bond form. After all, the two should be together when building the militia and visiting the Browns. Naturally, the series could develop this storyline to include everyone, but there are images of both Roger and Fergus on horses as everyone rides out.
What will be fun to see is how the two men are completely different and yet very much the same. Fergus is a man of the time. While he’s gained some future personality traits thanks to his time around Claire, he is still a man who believes he should support his wife. He’s a man who will have some 18th-century views, which could clash with Roger’s 20th-century outlook.
Fergus could even look down on Roger for a lack of skills. We’ve seen what Jamie thinks of Roger, and Jamie knows that it’s not Roger’s fault he’s from the future. Fergus will have no idea why Roger doesn’t know how to wield a sword, ride a horse, or use certain tools.
And yet, both men will want to provide for their wives but have limitations that prevent that. Roger’s lack of skills and knowledge means he doesn’t really have a way to look after Brianna. Fergus’ disability causes problems in the 18th century. This is where the two can bond together, finding a friendship in each other as they find a way to look out for their women.
Of course, neither man needs to protect his woman. Brianna and Marsali are strong and independent women who have proven they can look after their families. They’ll continue to prove that throughout Outlander Season 5, as long as it sticks to the books. That’s another thing they can bond over!
